The goal is simple; fitness. This realistically involves two things for someone like me. Weight loss (cuz I’m a pudge pudge) and strength/cardio improvement (going on 12 months largely disabled and I can’t do much of anything).
Twice in the past I’ve addressed the weight issue and both approaches worked pretty well for me. The first time I started going to the gym three times a week. 45 minutes of cardio and then three sets of every single weight machine, followed by sit ups and push ups. Unfortunately when I tried that after the birth of my second child, it didn’t work. I have no idea why, maybe I didn’t hit it hard enough? Maybe my diet was too far gone for it to be enough? Whatever the reason all I did was get very very tired.
So, I did it the other way, with diet. I don’t really like the word diet, as it tends to make people think of being hungry all the time. For me it was more about being conscious of what I eat and when. Substituting things where I could (that wouldn’t affect flavour, I simply will not eat something that tastes like cardboard), and realising that I don’t have to feel stuffed to not be hungry anymore.
My big problem is that it’s really hard for me to do both these things at the same time. I suffer from some interesting blood sugar issues. Not diabetes or anything like that, but a lack of something moving through my system usually sends my blood pressure into a free fall. CJ no eat, CJ fall down. Still, this time with a little trial and error (and maybe some research too) I’m going to have a go at doing both at once.
Just as a side note (I’m not sure I believe it really), my midwife for my last pregnancy told me he’d read that modern western humans eat on average 80% more than they actually need to. If that were true, I think there would be a lot more people needing a crane to get out of bed. Still, if I only consumed the perfectly appropriate amount, I wouldn’t be over weight would I?
Anyway, with this goal for 2013 (still feels weird writing that) in mind, I’ll be posting a little more than usual about fitness, health and food (none of which I am particularly knowledgable about, but we’ll learn together) and once my internet is back up and running, this resolution will have its own special tab to keep track of what’s going on. Horrendous and embarrassing photos of my current weight are in the pipeline so stick around for that.
